Course Requirements and Descriptions

The following education courses may be taken prior to admission into the Teacher Education Program:

SCED 3311 – Curriculum Planning in the Secondary School: Basic principles of curriculum planning in the secondary school.  It requires 15 observation hours. *Music students see advisor.

RED 3342 – Reading and Study in the Content Areas: Methods and materials for developing maturity in reading and study skills.  Special emphasis is given to the development of interest, the matching of students to the proper materials, and instructional techniques for integrating the teaching of skills with the teaching of content.

Methods course – depending on your major:

SCED 3312 – General Methods in the Secondary School:  Selection and usage of instructional methods in the secondary school.

SCED 4367 – Teaching Math in Secondary School:  Materials and methods used in teaching mathematics in the secondary school.  Skills in analysis and discovery, inquiry, and deductive teaching will be emphasized.

SCED 4368 – Teaching Science in Secondary School:  Materials and methods used in teaching natural and physical science in the secondary school.  Emphasis will be placed on developing skills in the use of inquiry, process approach, and discovery in teaching science.

ENGL 4355 – Teaching Composition and Literature in Secondary School:  Current theory and practice in teaching writing and literature in the secondary schools; review of applicable research along with practices for teaching literature and the composing process.

SPAN/FREN 4301 – Methods of Foreign Language Instruction:  Practical applications of linguistic principles to the teaching of modern foreign languages.  Classroom techniques, and development and evaluation of teaching and testing materials appropriate to the written and spoken languages.

ARTE 4347 – Methods of Teaching Art: A survey of methods and practices involved in the effective and creative approach to Art Education. Special emphasis is placed on demonstration techniques and opportunities to teach as a part of a group and on an individual basis.  Each student will observe in both elementary and secondary art classrooms.

The following courses require admission to Teacher Education:

EDPC 3300 – Developmental Variations: This course covers typical development (cognitive-language, physical-motor, and social-personality) from birth through young adulthood as well as variations of typical development and accommodations made within the education system to include federal, state, local, and school-based decisions in instruction, curriculum, and law.  It requires 15 observation hours.  Prerequisites: SCED 3311 and admission to Teacher Education.

SCED 3317 – Multicultural Education in the Secondary School:  A survey of cultural education models, instructional methods, and classroom interaction processes in secondary schools that reflect the cultural composition of the United States.Prerequisites: SCED 3311, EDPC 3300, admission to Teacher Education, and admission to Internship Semester.  Corequisite: SCED 4691.

SCED 4691/ TED 4696/ 4697/ 4698/ 4699 – Internship in Secondary Education:  Students enroll in the field-based program and participate in student-centered classroom instruction as members of the instructional team.  In addition to classroom teaching duties, interns are co-enrolled in SCED 3317. Interns demonstrate that they can synthesize the knowledge, values, and experiences of earlier semester in developing an effective professional style.  Interns are scheduled to be at their assigned partner school all day for 5 days/week throughout the semester. Prerequisites: SCED 3311, EDPC 3300, admission to Teacher Education, and admission to Internship Semester.  Corequisite: SCED 3317.

Suggested sequencing of coursework

Sophomore year:

SCED 3311 – Curriculum Planning in the Secondary School is the introductory course for the education minor and it is recommended that this course is taken first.

Junior year through first semester Senior year:

RED 3342 – Reading and Study in the Content Area

Methods Course (SCED 3312, ENGL 4355, SPAN/FREN 4301, SCED 4367, or SCED 4368)

EDPC 3300 – Developmental Variations

Senior year second semester:

TED 4691/4696/4697/4698/4699 and SCED 3317 (taken concurrently)
