Amy
Reyes Garcia was born in the small Texas town of Colorado
City on April 24, 1973 to parents Gabriel and Katherine
Reyes. She, along with her younger brother and sister
were dragged across the United States and over seas
by their military dad. The Reyes Family spent time in
North Carolina, Missouri, Arizona, Texas, New Mexico,
Japan, and Panama. Amy finally settled at White Sands
Missile Range, where her father retired from the Army
and as luck would have it, where she met her future
husband, Michael.
Amy
attended Mayfield High School in Las Cruces, NM, and
graduated in May of 1991. Upon graduation she enrolled
at the University of Texas at El Paso, and began pursuing
a Bachelors degree in Biology. After two torturous years
at UTEP, she transferred to New Mexico State University
and later wed Michael in June of 1995, who was also
attending NMSU pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering.
For the next several years they struggled to juggle
a growing family, Andres; born 1996 and Christina; born
1999.
All
this while continuing to strive to meet their own career
goals, while both holding down full time jobs. In May
of 2000, Amy's was awarded a Bachelors of Science in
Biology. Soon after graduation, opportunity came knocking
at her door in the form of a scholarship and grad assistantship
to help fund her education and begin course work in
Curriculum and Instruction. In the two years she worked
on her Master's, she assisted the Dean and became instrumental
in recruiting and organizing conferences and seminars
for the college of Education.
In the summer of 2002, Amy began teaching at Canyon
Hills Middle School, and with the enthusiasm and high
energy levels that come with being a first year teacher,
she eagerly signed up to fill several volunteer roles.
She has been involved in the creation and rejuvenation
of several extra-curricular activities all beneficial
to the student body to include: The CHAT club, Cobra
Stomp, Canyon Hills Math Club, Cobra Cheerleading Squad,
and the yearbook staff. Amy recently celebrated the
birth of her third child, Maya Gabrielle in 2006 and
is entering her 6th year of instruction at Canyon Hills.
She continues to volunteer at CHMS and is never ending
in her quest for new ideas and methods to reach each
and every student.
