2018 SWS AAPG Anual Convention

The Hydrocarbon Future of Chihuahua, MX

A session to be given during the southwest Section Meeting of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG),
April 07 - April 10, 2018.
El Paso, Texas
The AAPG is having a section meeting in El Paso, Texas.  Three years ago Mexico passed a new Energy Reform which provides for the first time in 80 years for foreign petroleum companies to operate in Mexico with ownership interests.  Leasing of tracts with hydrocarbon potential has taken place in the Gulf of Mexico and on-shore, and will proceed northward, with Chihuahua opening in two to three years.  The meeting in El Paso provides a unique opportunity to plan geological, engineering, and social activities for this upcoming event.
PEMEX carried out exploration in Chihuahua up until the middle 1980s.  The Tobosa and Pedregoza Basins are Paleozoic in age, and are similar to the Permian Basin in west Texas, to the east of Chihuahua. The Permian Basin is one of the most prolific hydrocarbon producers in the world, and fracking is very active today. The Chihuahua Trough/Basin is Mesozoic in age.  These basins have the hydrocarbon potential, however they have been disturbed by the Rio Grande Rift.
The upcoming hydrocarbon activities in Chihuahua present entrepreneurial opportunities.  Discovery must take place.  Many engineering activities must be initiated and carried out.  Water sources and disposal after use are major questions.   Social questions must not be neglected.  Where is the educated workforce? What questions will NGOs present? Can fracking be done safely?
The Center for Entrepreneurial Geosciences at the University of Texas at El Paso is organizing this Session. Relevant speakers are sought.  Please contact Dr. Philip Goodell, 915 227 5754, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

PDAC 2018, International Convention, Trade Show & Investors Exchange is the world’s leading convention for people, companies and organizations in, or connected with, mineral exploration.

Sunday, March 04 - Wednesday, March 07

Toronto, Canada
PDAC is the most famous mineral industry convention; this is the place to be if you are interested in mining and exploration. We learned about the challenges the industry is facing these days, the latest exploration technologies, the industry marketing, etc.
We also made valuable connections for the center with top representatives of the industry all over the world, and had the opportunity to share our work as an entrepreneurial center with students and geoscientists from different universities; they showed great interest in the different courses the center is proposing to offer in the near future. We hope to attract these students to come to UTEP for these courses.
In addition, we had the pleasure to talk with couple of our Center advisors, Bill and Janet Lee-sheriff; Bill is the Executive Chairman at Golden Predator Mining and Chairman at Encore Energy Corp; Janet is the Chief Executive Officer at Golden Predator, they both have great experience in the mining industry combining exploration and socio-economics. They offered to come on April and share their experience with us.

10th International Congress of Prospectors and Explorers (ProExplo 2017)

The CEGS presented a short course in Entrepreneurial Geosciences, and Dr. Goodell gave a Magistral Talk

The International Congress of Prospectors and Explorers - ProExplo is one of the main geological-mining meetings in Latin America for its interesting conference program, the high quality of the exhibitors and participation of important companies and professionals of exploration sector.
- The Center counted with an exhibition booth during the convention, where we had the opportunity to talk with experts of the exploration industry and connect with other entrepreneur institutions as well as attract candidates to join the center and be part of UTEP community.
May 8 -10, 2017, Lima , Peru.

Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) Annual Meeting 2017

March 5 - 8, 2017, Dr. Goodell with 5 students.
Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada have their global meeting in Toronto every early March with 25,000 in attendance.  To hardrock Entrepreneurial geoscientists of the globe this is the Premier meeting.  Most additional meetings are also of great value. For a student, you walk around and this is astounding, multidimensional.  You can find some places where “I would want to be”.
Consequently, CEGS always tries to go to PDAC and take students. In 2017, six of us went, and we paid our own way. Next year we want to give Short Course, and have a booth

Prospectors and Developers of Canada (PDAC) Annual Meeting 2015

March 2015, Toronto, with 9 students

The PDAC organization touts itself as the Voice of the Mineral Exploration Community, emphasizing  mineral exploration instead of production.  Discoveries are often made by prospectors and junior mineral exploration companies after which the property may change ownership to mineral resource developers who may build a mine.  Exploration entails higher risk.  PDAC meets every March and is the largest such meeting in the world, with 25,000 prospectors, geologists, developers, analysts, investors, and representatives of 600 companies and 80 countries.  Exploration is the vibrant theme and those with or seeking discoveries meet with developers who are interested in successful financial negotiations and valid properties.  Students @ PADC see this all in action.
